1. Clinical Examinations Perform comprehensive eye exams (vision tests, refraction, eye health assessment). Diagnose refractive errors: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, presbyopia. Use specialized equipment (slit lamps, phoropters, retinoscopes, OCT). 2. Prescribing & Treatment Prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses (including specialty fits like ortho-k, scleral lenses). Manage and monitor chronic eye diseases: glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy. 3. Patient Management Detect and co-manage pre/post-operative care for LASIK, cataract, or other eye surgeries. Provide emergency eye care (remove foreign bodies, treat abrasions). Advise patients on vision aids, low vision rehabilitation, or pediatric eye issues. 4. Administrative & Business Maintain accurate patient records. Manage optical retail staff or lens ordering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform Comprehensive Eye Exams: Conduct full patient assessments including refraction (to determine prescription for glasses/contacts), binocular vision testing, and eye alignment.
  • Diagnose Ocular Diseases: Identify and manage eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts.
  • Prescribe Corrective Lenses: Determine and prescribe appropriate eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions to correct refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, presbyopia).
  • Fit and Evaluate Contact Lenses: Fit patients with various types of contact lenses (soft, rigid gas permeable, scleral, or ortho-k) and provide training on insertion, removal, and care.
  • Manage Ocular Emergencies: Provide urgent care for eye injuries, foreign body removal, corneal abrasions, and acute infections.
  • Monitor and Co-Manage Surgical Care: Perform pre-operative and post-operative care for patients undergoing LASIK, cataract surgery, or other eye surgeries, and co-manage with ophthalmologists.
  • Provide Pediatric & Geriatric Care: Assess vision development in children (e.g., detect amblyopia/lazy eye) and manage age-related vision changes in elderly patients.
  • Educate & Counsel Patients: Advise patients on eye health, proper lens hygiene, UV protection, systemic diseases affecting the eyes (e.g., diabetes/hypertension), and treatment options.

Requirements

  • Qualification : Bachelor's in Optometry
  • Registered Optometrist in Malaysia Optical Council
  • Previous experience is not required; however, candidates with experience will have an advantage
  • Refraction & Visual Acuity Testing – Accurately measure refractive errors and determine precise lens prescriptions.
  • Slit Lamp Biomicroscopy – Examine anterior and posterior eye structures to detect abnormalities or diseases.
  • Retinoscopy & Ophthalmoscopy – Perform objective refraction and examine the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels.
  • Contact Lens Fitting – Select, fit, and evaluate various types of contact lenses (soft, RGP, scleral, ortho-k).
  • Tonometry (Eye Pressure Measurement) – Diagnose and monitor glaucoma using techniques like Goldmann applanation or non-contact tonometry.
  • Visual Field Testing (Perimetry) – Assess peripheral vision to detect glaucoma, neurological issues, or retinal damage.
  • Foreign Body Removal – Safely remove corneal or conjunctival foreign bodies using a slit lamp and appropriate instruments.
  • Pediatric & Binocular Vision Assessment – Diagnose amblyopia, strabismus, and convergence insufficiency using specialized techniques.
